Common types of refrigerants and their characteristics


R22 Refrigerant

Also known as freon refrigerant, the chemical name is difluorochloromethane, and the chemical formula is CHF2Cl. It is a medium-pressure medium-temperature refrigerant with a boiling point of -40.8 °C, a freezing point of -160 °C, a critical temperature of 96 °C, and a critical pressure of 4.974MPa. Although R22 does not burn, does not explode, and is less toxic, it has a strong permeability and is difficult to detect after a leak. The unit volume of R22 is similar to that of ammonia refrigerant. The lowest temperature that can be achieved by two-stage compression or in an air-conditioning refrigeration system is -80°C, but this method is not economical.

R32 Refrigerant

The chemical formula is CH2F2. R32 is a colorless, odorless, slightly burning substance with a boiling point of (ºC, atmospheric pressure): -51.6. The combustion limit in air is 14%~31% (volume ratio). At room temperature, HFC-32 has a stable structure and is not easy to decompose, but it will decompose into HF, carbonyl fluoride and other substances when exposed to open flames and high temperatures.


R410a Refrigerant

It is composed of R32 and R125 working fluids mixed with 50% and 50% mass fractions, and belongs to HFCs refrigerants. R410a refrigerant is non-flammable, with an ODP of 0 and a GWP of 2340, so R410a is not a truly environmentally friendly refrigerant. With a bubble point temperature of -51.6°C and a phase transition temperature slip of less than 0.2°C, R410a is a near-azeotropic mixture with thermodynamic properties very close to those of a simplex. The capacity and pressure of R410a refrigerant is higher than that of R22, and the operating pressure is 50%-60% higher. The operating noise of the R410a is significantly lower than that of the R22 compressor by 2-4 decibels. Due to its high pressure and high density, the refrigerant pipe diameter can be reduced a lot, and the compressor size and displacement can also be reduced; At the same time, the high thermal conductivity and low viscosity of the R410A liquid phase give it superior transport characteristics to R22.
